Dallas Can Academy Names Childcare Center In Honor of Legendary Dallas Journalist, Gloria Campos

Wee Can Academy, an early childhood development center at the newly opened Dallas Can Academy Grant East campus, will honor a long-time supporter of Dallas Can Academies, news journalist Gloria Campos.  The campus’ brand new center will be named the Gloria Campos Wee Can Academy.  The dedication ceremony is set for September 15 at 10 a.m. and will celebrate Campos’ passion and dedication to children and education.

Influenced by her grandmother who never learned to read, Campos has a long history of advocating for children and their development.  For most of her career at WFAA-TV, Campos anchored the weekly Wednesday’s Child feature and brought stories of children in foster care to the forefront for North Texas viewers.  Building families and connecting children to safe and loving homes is something Campos cherished during her 30 years in broadcast.

“I love what Dallas Can Academies provides for their high school students and the community by adding on-site childcare centers to teach and nurture our future generations,” said Campos.  “I learned from my grandmother, Elvira, how important education is for everyone. I support innovative education efforts in her honor whenever I can. Dallas Can removes barriers to education for students who are parents by providing a wonderful place for their children while their parents are in class and working to earn a high school diploma."

“We are so proud to have the opportunity to honor Gloria and celebrate how she has walked along side us in our journey to lift up Dallas Can Academies and the young adults and children we serve,” said Richard Marquez, CEO of Texans Can Academies.

Wee Can Academies’ mission is to provide a safe, nurturing and educational place for children and to partner with and support families.  The childcare centers enroll children ages six weeks to 12 years (13 years at the Gloria Campos Wee Can Academy) for all-day care or afterschool programs. Programs provide developmentally appropriate practices to enrich the lives of infants, toddlers and grade school children through play, social and academic activities that will provide experiences to stimulate the physical, emotional and cognitive growth of each child.

There are three Wee Can Academy centers in the Dallas area providing affordable childcare for the community and to Dallas Can Academy students that are raising children. They are located at the Carrollton-Farmers Branch campus, Ross Avenue campus in east Dallas and the Grant East campus in the southern sector of Dallas. The childcare option is a great resource for students who are also parents because it gives them an opportunity to go to school to earn their high school diploma knowing that their child is nearby for them to visit.
