Work Continues On The 2nd Annual Oak Cliff Jazz Fest/Arts & Crafts Fair On Sept. 20

Presented by The Labyrinth Walk Coffee House (LWCH) and hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Oak Cliff, (3839 W. Kiest Blvd), this year’s Fest/Fair promises to rival the success of first held last year.  The fest runs from 11 am to 10 pm with performances every hour from noon on alternating stages. In addition to providing a major musical event in Oak Cliff, LWCH provides an opportunity for area artists, artisans and crafters to display and sell their wares; it provides space of non-profits to distribute information about their organization; and it provides advertising opportunities to local businesses through sponsorships. And this year, something special: the Fest will be dedicated to promoting “Trumpets for Kids” a nonprofit organization.

In the planning stages for months, committee members continue to raise money through sponsorships, booth rentals and grants; vendors are being contacted; volunteers are being lined up; performers have been confirmed.

2nd ANNUAL OAK CLIFF JAZZ FEST PRESENTS

TRUMPETS FOR KIDS:  Kids from the program will be featured performers in this year’s musical lineup.  Through this program, students are able to apply for a trumpet they might otherwise not be able to afford.  The program then aims to have kids perform for other kids to inspire each other and create a platform for dialogue about goals and activities.  Music is the universal language of our world – a part of life in every country and culture.  It is a powerful tool to help children learn and shape their lives,   fosters the development of attention and listening skills and assists in emotional development,  Music involved is known to enhance self-esteem and confidence and has been linked to improved math, member and reading skills. http://www.trumpets4kids.com/

NAUGHTY PROFESSOR: This 2013 Big Easy Awards “Best Emerging Artist” Nominee sprung from the musically fertile ground of New Orleans in 2010 while still in college.  This instrumental sextet describes its music as funk, but there’s a lot more to it than that and is also described as acid-jazz and Heist-funk – complex, sophisticated, and definitely New Orleans.  Six passionate and creative young musicians – Bill Daniel, Noah Young, Sam Shahin, Nick Ellman, Ian Bowman, John Culbreth –  mostly met while attended Loyola University in New Orleans, from which they have graduated. Naughty Professor is out to bring fresh, contemporary pep to some retro music, according to Craig D. Lindsey, http://www.newsobserver.com/. http://naughtyprofessormusic.com/about/

MISS MARCY & HER SUGAR DADDY’S:  She ain’t no schooled musician; she’s a Bar Singer with a degree in English Lit from the University of North Texas who has been hanging out in bars playing music with Dallas’ finest musicians.  Her musical passion resides with Blues and traditional Jazz with a style derived from early 20th century Divas including Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Big Mama Thorton, etc.  She rarely does popular standards preferring songs considered by audiences of the 20’s and 30’s too suggestive for radio or too racial and she endeavors to re-create the sounds of that era. She has been a guest and a guest DJ on KNON 89.3 fm and voted “What to Do” 12 times by the Dallas Morning News and Dallas Observer and the 2013 Dallas Observer Top Ten Blues Artist and “Best of Blues.”  Her first CD with original music is being released. http://www.missmarcy.com

FREDDIE JONES:  Freddie played the National Anthem at the opening of the Dallas Cowboys home games last year and is contracted to play again this year. A very popular jazz trumpet player and composer in the DFW area, he kicks up the energy and thrills a jazz lover’s soul with the sound he coaxes from his horns.  He has performed with his group road throughout the southwest, performing in hot spots from Austin’s The Elephant Room to Little Rock’s Riverfront Auditorium to numerous festivals in the Dallas/ Fort Worth Metroplex, Oklahoma City, and everywhere in between. He has also performed in Paris, The Hague and Rotterdam. Freddie is the founder of the non-profit “Trumpets for Kids” being promoted at this year’s Fest.  He has a jazz studies degree from the University of North Texas. http://freddiejones.net/

EASTFIELD FACULTY JAZZ COMBO:  Dr. Oscar Passley of the Faculty Jazz Combo is a trumpet artist, an educator and a clinician who is equally proficient in both classical and jazz genres and has performed on the stages of Fair Park Music Hall, Myerson Symphony center, Bass Hall, etc. and featured at events including the Taste of New Orleans Festival and more.   He has shared the stage with such notables as Andre Bocelli "Bebe" Neuwirth, B. J. Thomas and others. He has been a guest conductor at BCPS All Honors High School Jazz Ensemble.  He has held clinics throughout the country at schools and festivals. The Faculty Jazz Combo performed at the retirement ceremony for DCCCD Chancellor Dr. Wright Lassiter.    http://www.oscarpassley.com/

TUTU JONES: The son of Dallas-based R&B guitarist Johnny B. Jones, “Tutu” Jones was truly a product of his environment -- growing up in a house frequently populated by guests including Freddie King, Little Joe Blue and Ernie Johnson, his own future as a bluesman was never in doubt. He began his musical career as a drummer at 4½.  One night, Tutu was fooling around with Joe Blue’s guitar backstage at a gig in Oak Cliff and that became his instrument of choice.  Jones steadily honed his guitar and songwriting skills to become an individualist who puts a very personal stamp on every note he plays, every syllable he sings. You could call him the living personification of the sound of South Dallas, where Blues and Soul meet and are stronger for it. http://www.tutujones.com/bio.html

LADY DIAMOND:  A multi-talented woman, her classy jazz vocal performances leaves audiences wanting more of her fusion of jazz, classic and soul - arguably a mixture of Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald and Diane Krall.  Lady Diamond has performed throughout the Dallas area and has been recently appearing at the House of Blues on Tuesday evenings and is a regular at the Labyrinth Walk Coffee House’s 2nd Sunday Jazz Jams. She has been a requested and a featured performer at many events.  She sung background for Michael Bolton, Andrae Crouch and more and is the emcee of the World Famous House of Blues Sunday Gospel.  She’s appeared in commercials, movies, produced a TV show and was featured on Channel 8 DayBreak, Fox 4 Good Day Texas, NBC5, Channel 21, Insights and has made numerous other television appearances and plays. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Singer-Lady-Diamond/232696413436383

LARRY LAMPKIN: He’s an American blues guitarist and singer-songwriter, born and still residing in Fort Worth Texas. Larry started writing songs and playing guitar as a teenager.  Mostly a self taught musician, he was privileged to take lessons from experienced neighbor musicians, including blues legend U.P. Wilson.  Larry toured the USA as a lead guitarist and band leader for recording artist, soul-blues singer, Vernon Garrett.  Larry’s first CD, “When I Get Home,” received immense air play and reviews.  He has shared the stage and ticket with such great blues artist as Lucky Peterson, Buddy Guy, John Mayall, etc. His songwriting reflects everyday life experiences.  A passionate artist influenced by the sounds of Texas, Chicago, and Delta blues, he is committed to delivering the ultimate experience whether live or on his new CD “The Blues Is Real.” https://www.facebook.com/larrylampkinmusic

CAROLYN LEE JONES: Carolyn Lee Jones's influences and choices of genre are as broad as her vocal styling is rich. She makes standards sound new and the new sound standard. It is something of an audio calling card, the perfect representation of who she is and the musicians in her band. Influenced by Julie London, Anita O'Day and Shirley Horn to Tony Bennett, Diana Krall and Laura Nyro, Carolyn Lee Jones is a melodic jazz-pop singer-stylist with a combination of rich and expressive vocals. A vibrant vocalist with a love of both jazz and modern music, Carolyn's eclectic repertoire includes beautiful renditions of familiar standards from the Great American Songbook, the evolution of vintage retro pop songs into the jazz context and new material. http://www.carolynleejones.com

FINGERPRINTS: Known as “one of the best kept music secrets in the South,” standing room-only crowds have been lining up to hear the perfect blend of Jazz and R&B delivered by this Dallas based sextet at venues and festivals throughout the South and Southwest.  Over 20 years of live performance, their distinguished sound of soul, blues and jazz has evolved.  They have released five CDs to date.  Their latest, “Dream Life is a testament to the good fortune we have making a living at our music and so we want to inspire others to do the same. We demonstrate that enthusiasm every time we perform or record and hope that people feel the same joy we do,” said bass player Frederick Nichelson.  Despite a 100 shows a year, they still find time for their local community, donating concerts to civic and non-profit organizations such as the Cub Scouts of American. http://www.fingerprintsband.com/
